Anne Whitney Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982,
in Brooklyn, New York. She is an American film
actress.
Hathaway's first major role came in the short-lived
television series Get Real. She gained widespread
recognition for her roles in The Princess Diaries
and its 2004 sequel as a young girl who discovers
she's a member of royalty.
She also had a notable role in the 2002 film
production of Nicholas Nickleby, and a starring role
in 2004's Ella Enchanted. A former top-ranking
soprano in New York, Hathaway was purportedly a
front-runner for the role of "Christine" in the 2004
film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.
However, due to scheduling conflicts with Princess
Diaries 2, she couldn't take the role, which was
later given to newcomer Emmy Rossum.
Hathaway soon started to move away from
family-friendly films. Following Princess Diaries 2,
she appeared topless in the films Havoc and
Brokeback Mountain. Her desire to break out of her
Princess Diaries image parallels that of her
one-time co-star, Julie Andrews, who went topless in
the film S.O.B. in order to break away from the
image she created from her 1960s musicals. In
interviews, Hathaway said that doing family-friendly
films didn't mean she was similar to their
characters or mean she objected to appearing nude in
other films.
In 2006, she will star in The Devil Wears Prada,
opposite Meryl Streep, and Becoming Jane, where
she'll play a young Jane Austen.
Hathaway shares her name with Anne Hathaway, the
wife of William Shakespeare. She has Irish ancestry
on her father's side and is a graduate of Millburn
High School. She also spent several semesters
studying at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York
before transferring to New York University. Since
2004, Hathaway's been in a relationship with real
estate developer Raffaello Follieri. She has two
brothers and she will be a bridesmaid in her brother
Michael's wedding when he marries his boyfriend in
2006.
